...tune in to any FM or AM station. You can channel your inner '40s film star when you attach Hulger's P*Phone retro handset to your cell phone. Allowing you to avoid radiation exposure from your cell phone, it's a more glamorous alternative to a hands-free headset. Another take on the vintage telephone is Bang & Olufsen's new Serene cell phone. Developed with Samsung, it has keys arranged in a circular dial. But with e-mail, a camera and Bluetooth technology, it's a thoroughly modern way to communicate...

...addition to quite a few Bluetooth wireless capabilities (stereo headset, dial-up networking, etc.), the phone has built-in GPS. You can download the VZ Navigator turn-by-turn GPS program - it's free to try but if you like it, there's a monthly fee. The phone has a tiny slot for a MicroSD memory card, formerly known as TransFlash. Besides giving you roughly 250MB of file-storage space, it has integrated audio circuitry, so you can plug in an (included) pair of headphones with built-in microphone. For Version 1.0, a wired headset is probably the most sensible, but you've only got about three feet of movement from the V-Phone itself. Since the V-Phone must plug directly into a PC, it can be a bummer if that PC is hidden under a desk. And the service's sound quality, coming through that headset...

...just-in-time celebrity culture. Club Libby Lu, a fast-growing chain of mall stores owned by Saks, provides the setting and accessories for elaborate makeover parties for girls as young as 4 at a relatively reasonable $21 a head. They can strut down a catwalk, don mock Madonna headset microphones and pester their parents to buy Role Model perfume or a LOCAL CELEBRITY T shirt. It would be easy to bemoan the trend as the end of childhood or the corruption of innocence. But the hunger for recognition doesn't end with the acquisition of a driver's license...
