Sure, we're proud of the Minutemen in the Revolution; we're relieved that the Civil War was able to heal the awful internal strife that had divided our country; we note that the Spanish-American War marked the emergence of American power and leadership in the world (despite our misgivings about its imperialist implications); and we more keenly sense the brute horror but ultimate triumph of justice and order in the two world wars. Veterans Day conjures up all of these recollections about America's military heritage. Yet something is lacking and terribly wrong today...

...Muslim at prayer thinking "kill." Extra-careful precautions should be taken not to offend the Iranian people's religious sensitivities, nor to arouse any prejudices on the part of the people of the U.S.A., for the scars of this whole incident would take a long time to heal and would take the human rights movement back a long way. If Islamic practices are ridiculed it could create a deleterious reaction on the part of the world's seven hundred million Muslims and the "white devil" myth and its association with colonialism could surface to complicate the problem even more...

...possible that "the ablest students ... are headed for law or medicine" because they realize that we are endangered today by yesterday's science? Maybe they are compelled by conscience to protect and heal the delicate creation that yesterday's scientists probed with freedom, and all the damage that entails. I hope so.
