...Catholic, I am ashamed of the actions of the Roman Catholic Church and its hospital systems, which proscribe abortion and other reproductive services, including birth control, morning-after pills and sterilization [HEALTH, Nov. 15]. The essence of Catholic teachings is "Follow your conscience." Along with the people who embrace other faiths, Catholics of conscience deplore the church's attempt to force them to do its will. While Catholic-sponsored health-care facilities are bound by the church's teachings prohibiting, among other things, contraception and tubal ligations, it is imperative that these teachings be balanced with the medical needs of the community. The idea that a peanut diet cuts cholesterol is not a total surprise to nutritionists. Peanut oil, like olive, is a monounsaturated fat--a known cholesterol fighter. The news should be welcome...
Musharraf: I would like to move toward the substance of democracy and away from the sham democracy we have had. I want a true democracy at the grass-roots level in which people can govern themselves and run their own health programs and road construction. Members of the National Assembly were doling out uncontrolled funds and controlling people's destinies at their whims. I'll change that...
