...freshman class trooped into the Library of Congress' Coolidge Auditorium to attend a new institution: a school for Congressmen, bipartisan brainchild of such considerate upperclassmen as Maine's Democrat Frank Coffin and New Jersey's Republican Peter Frelinghuysen. In the first class, frosh heard New York Timesman James ("Scotty") Reston tell them how to make news. Senator Hugh Scott, Pennsylvania Republican, and Senator Eugene McCarthy, Minnesota Democrat, both lately risen from the Lower House to the Continuing Body, rubbed in a delicate point by scheduling a discussion this week titled "The House: Changing Institution in a Changing...
Most of the nation was at lunch, but in their restaurants and homes Belgians fell silent as the youthful voice, how and then shaking slightly with emotion, came over the radio. Later, 4,200 miles away in Léopoldville, blacks and whites heard the same words blaring over the loudspeakers of sound trucks. Lean, spectacled King Baudouin had taken it upon himself to explain in person his government's long-awaited program to give independence to the Congo, that vast land 80 times the size of Belgium, that was once his great granduncle's personal fief. To one villager, the noise resembled "a continuous dynamite blast." Father Placido went worriedly into the street, as did the electrician and some of the men from the tavern...
Limited Repertory. Seated on separate benches. Pianists Demus and Badura-Skoda worked their way through five little-heard pieces from the limited repertory of original four-hand works. The five: Mozart's Sonata in C. K.521, Hindemith's Sonata for Four Hands, three works by Schubert (who wrote more four-hand music than any other major composer). In some pieces, Demus played "low" (the bass part) and Badura-Skoda "high" (the treble), in others they switched positions. Since the bass player invariably tends to underpedal to avoid thickness, the pedaling throughout was done by the treble player. When...
