Teens writing poetry about everything from family problems to broken hearts has always been considered a rite of passage. But lately, those churning out heartfelt sonnets and odes to environmentalism are just as likely to be thoughtful elementary school students as moody teens. Opportunities for kids to develop their writing skills are popping up everywhere, from local after-school programs to Internet sites. ...Heartfelt thanks to Jodie Morse for the article "Paws in the Dust" [THE VICTIMS, Sept. 24], about Dr. Larry Hawk's efforts to rescue and revive the thousands of pets stranded after the disaster. Once the shock of seeing the towers collapse had subsided enough to allow me to think, my first thought was for the children who were orphaned; the second was for the pets left behind by this terrible tragedy. I know the human toll is beyond understanding, but these people loved their pets, and the animals adored them. What an amazing man Hawk is to put aside...

...might understandably ask why I should even bother criticizing "Isaac and Ishmael." It's timely, and was written and produced in record time. It contains a lot of sentiments, however hamhandedly expressed, that we need to hear now. It benefited charity. And it's undeniably a heartfelt response to an unimaginable tragedy...

...Rally for Peace and Justice” in Tercentenary Theatre upheld the noblest of ideals. We were happy to see that its tone was appropriately muted: the gathering concluded with the singing of “Dona nobis pacem,” a heartfelt hymn for peace at home and abroad. The most moving speeches were those condemning the acts of intolerance toward Muslims or those of Arab or South Asian descent. It would be a great shame if the horrific tragedy of Sept. 11 makes America an uglier place for citizens of any ethnicity or religion to live. Fortunately...
