Unburdened with any particular sense of the realistic or humane, Stalag 17 is a heartless jape that manages to be both lively and amusing. The sardonic talents of Producer-Director-Co-Scenarist Billy (Sunset Boulevard) Wilder are well tuned to these rather ghoulish goings on. Taking the action out of the barrack confines and into the barbed-wire compound at intervals, he has made a fluent film of the play. He has also got crisp characterizations from his cast. William Holden gives one of his quietly competent performances as a cynical G.I. Otto Preminger and Sig Ruman play comedy Nazis...
...streetcorner preacher than the polished diplomat some historians make him out to be. In Bologna, Italy he had attracted attention "by standing on a vacant bench, waving his big hat, and shouting to loungers and marketing folk to come and listen to the Word of God." In "golden, heartless Goa," the citadel of Portugal's Asiatic colonies, he got crowds for his instructions by walking up & down the streets ringing a large bell. When Gieseking comes to the otherworldly slow movement of Mozart's Concerto in A Major (K. 488), he sounds rather heartless; his Beethoven G-Major Concerto is appropriately intimate, but could do with more drive and more clarity of detail...
...Producer Worthington Miner's Studio One (CBS, Mon. 10 p.m.) has won more awards than any other dramatic program, largely because of its professional competence and grown-up storytelling. Last week, Studio One tackled Stefan Zweig's Letter from An Unknown Woman, a melodrama about a heartless Viennese composer (Melvyn Douglas) and a seamstress (Viveca Lindfors). Televiewers who expected to see the usual bang-up production, saw instead a shambles...
