...layerings of imagery? In the heyday of pop art, there was more stress on Rosenquist's means and less on his ends. One saw the devices from advertising, the billboard manner; one felt affronted by its "vulgarity" and by the schematic thinness and neatness of the paint, so heartless looking when compared with the thick, spontaneous and (it was assumed) emotionally stronger surface of late abstract expressionism. None of that seems a problem anymore. Rosenquist's ingenuities $ as a formal artist have floated to the top. And the subject is clearer: the vicissitudes of a certain kind of American dream...
...OTHER CHARACTERS fall just a little short. As the daughter-in-law, Glynn is trapped in a one-dimensional role, handicapped by the shallowness of the script.
