Co-founder of the Moscow Art Theatre in 1898 and its director ever since, he revolted against classical conventions, emphasized realism, truth, emotional sincerity, charged his actors to "live the part every moment." He was equally proficient as actor, author (An Actor Prepares, My Life and Art), teacher and philosopher.
