Given the high finish of his marbles, the roughness of his terra-cotta models comes as a surprise. In the first heat of exploring a motif, Canova worked as quickly and directly, almost, as Rodin, squeezing and knifing the clay to slab out the shapes. On occasions, he could compress a remarkable charge of emotion into these little studies: in one of them, the curve of the long neck of Antigone weeping over her dead brothers has much the same shape and, in miniature, some of the same tragic force as the woman's head in Picasso's Guernica...

...feels like heaven," says Michael Broadnax, 26, of South Central Los Angeles. A former member of the Bloods, Broadnax did not dare venture into neighborhoods dominated by Crips until factions of the rival gangs forged their remarkable truce in the heat of last month's riots. "I can go to places I've never been or even ridden through before," he says. "It's like freedom." Those words are echoed over and over in South Central these days, as residents marvel at the pact that has brought relative peace to an area more accustomed to gunfire and bloodshed than...

...from $50 to $100 in electric bills over a 15-to-20 year period. A standard 100-watt incandescent bulb costs 75 cents and burns as long as 250 days. With a standard bulb, only 5% of the electricity is converted to light -- the rest is wasted away as heat. "Until now there has been no substantial improvement in lighting since the time of Thomas Edison," boasts Intersource president Pierre Villere...

GREENHOUSE GASES. It is known that the level of CO2, methane and other heat- trapping gases in the atmosphere has increased 50% since the start of the Industrial Revolution. Measurements also indicate that the world's average temperature has increased 1 degree F over the past 100 years. The rest is conjecture. Computer models suggest that as the buildup of greenhouse gases continues, average temperatures could jump 3 degrees F to 9 degrees F over the next 60 years. Some scientists speculate that even a small rise in average temperatures could lead to greater extremes in weather patterns from time...

...cheaper to try to build a following for an existing show than to start from scratch with a new one. Despite their unfashionable demographics, most of the oldies cast aside by NBC were picked up by other networks: Golden Girls (redubbed The Golden Palace) and In the Heat of the Night by CBS, and Matlock by ABC. "The main thing that guides the network schedules nowadays is the bottom line," says Joel Segal, an executive vice president of McAnn-Erickson advertising. "They're trying to save money, either by cutting the cost of programming or by reducing risk...
