...outward appearance a true Harvard man. Hoeing confesses to the heathen background of an Amherst A. B. (Cum Laude 1929). He smokes innumerable cigarettes, without removing them from his mouth; from this is derived, no doubt, in an attempt to escape the smoke, the tilt of his head and the squint of his eyes. Nights he is to be seen returning from Hazen's beer parlor, an aged grey slouch hat perched on his head, and the eternal butt in his mouth...

Throughout the tour, little has been said of the Laymen's Report on missions which raised deepest theological questions, such as whether or not Christ should be proclaimed to the heathen as God (TIME, Nov. 28, 1932 et seq.). Think of the smooth, oily surrender of the deity of our Savior ... I still repeat the cry, 'BACK TO LUTHER...

...Haaska, Missouri doctor's son, was finding his painful way through priggishness to virtue. In England he was doing well in biology when his sister's death called him home. There he married an older woman, narrow, Fundamentalist, and together they went to Africa to physic the heathen. But his marriage went to smash on the Rock of Ages. When he met a second-rate singer who flattered him, though a child could have told him not to take a chance, he did, with disastrous results. Disillusioned, middle-aged but still far from sophisticated, Dr. Haaska met Nurse...
