...hard to understand how Villa-Lobos could have written a song with such dreadful, simple-minded rhythm as The Little Train; nor is it easy to see why Yale sang it, and a worthless Swiss yodel song as well. And to top it off, they sang Fenno Heath's settings of three Blake poems, which employ only the most common place harmonies and rhythms and convey little of the poems' meanings. Indeed, several of the Whiffenpoofs' own songs were more imaginative. Heath's arrangements of two American folksongs were better, but his programming does not exploit the quality...
...cold and overcast on the Baltic coast. Rusted strands of barbed wire run over the sand dunes and dip into the sea. Across the border in East Germany is a vista of desolated heath, broken only by a squat Communist watchtower. Some 20 yds. beyond the barbed-wire barricade, the East Germans have hacked through the underbrush and cleared a strip of land 15 ft. wide. Later, I found that it rambled the entire length of the frontier. The purpose of the strip is to enable authorities to trace the footsteps of fleeing East Germans to determine their route...
...Secret Ways (Heath; U-l), from the thriller novel by Scotland's Alistair MacLean, is, like most of his works (H.M.S. Ulysses, The Guns of Navarone), a derring-documentary that celebrates courage-for-a-cause. Hero Richard Widmark starts out believing that "everybody's learned to live by compromise," changes his mind after he and the audience have spent 112 minutes of sadism, gunplay, torture, capture and escape, cliffhanging, ledge-crawling, escape and capture. It is easily the most relentless movie chase since The Great Train Robbery...
