...Young Savages (Hecht; U.A.) is taken from Evan (The Blackboard Jungle) Hunter's novel, A Matter of Conviction, which chronicled some savage, real-life skirmishes in New York's teenage gang warfare. The film is at its best when at its ugliest-picturing punks prowling their tenement-glutted, garbage-strewn "turf" (territory), or an Italian gang stabbing a blind Puerto Rican boy to death, or the grim subway beating of Assistant D.A. Burt Lancaster, or the switchblade threats on his pretty wife. These scenes were excitingly photographed on location in Manhattan's juvenile jungle, but the plot...

...Berman (IQ 149 by Stanford-Binet, one disappointing point short of genius) and his friend Juicer Montague (IQ a dandy 162) are 15-year-old men who live in Lakewood, Ohio in the late '30s, admire Omar Khayyam, Thomas Wolfe and Ben Hecht, the poet, and discuss serious matters. This is how Dan recalls one conversation: "Hee hee hee, snickeree. 'Who is our real mother?' Hee. 'Maybe your father was my father, Juicer. It's possible.' Snickeree. At last these questions, and others as pure, slipped away from us, and now the extremest demands...

...Hecht-Hill-Lancaster's Cry Tough, a rough and rumble film about Puerto Ricans in New York, includes a scene in a bedroom occupied by Actor John Saxon and Actress Linda Cristal. In the U.S. she appears in a slip, but the version shot for export confines her wardrobe to one small pair of black panties, and allows the camera to meander athletically where it will. 'Everybody was kind of nervous" about Cry Tough's potential box office, explained one behind-the-scenes executive, so they asked for Actress Cristal's cooperation in order...

...Unforgiven (Hecht-Hill-Lancaster; United Artists) is a massive and masterful attempt to gild the oat. The picture runs for two hours and seven minutes and cost $5,500,000, even though most of it was filmed in what Hollywood's cost accountants call the "budget badlands" of central Mexico. It presents two major stars (Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn) and an outsize posse of featured players (Audie Murphy, Charles Bickford, Lillian Gish, John Saxon, Albert Salmi, June Walker, Joseph Wiseman). It was directed by John Huston, whose Treasure of the Sierra Madre is one of the best westerns ever...
