...Jake Kasdan, who also directs with a light and glancing hand. They are good-natured lads - smart, but not mean-spirited - and richly blessed by the presence of John C. Reilly in the title role. He's happy to play dumb - allowing Dewey to live profitably within the unexamined premises, the mythic fatuity, of his media-driven myth. Like the other films Apatow has been involved with, Walk Hard is a clever blend of very broad, occasionally raunchy gag-smithing...
...This is progress, however modest. In the past, the vast majority of Chinese companies single-mindedly focused on growth and profit, heedless of the impact their activities had on the environment and communities. Things began to change a few years ago, when "social responsibility went from being a topic pushed on China by others to one it took on as its own," says Zhou Weidong, who runs the China branch of the U.K.-based NGO Business for Social Responsibility. Democratic leaders smiled and cheered as the last votes were counted. What were they celebrating? Defeat? Surrender? In Iraq, only our enemies were...
...Black Book is, I think, an attempt to satisfy both these impulses. Such mixtures of motives rarely work in the movies. But this time it does. Verhoeven has something fascinating to say about characters whose motives are as messy as his own, and he does it in a tumbling, heedless, but finally irresistible rush of action and imagery. We are obliged, at least this once, to give the devil his due - and to consider the possibility that he may even be, in this instance, the angel of bleak truthfulness...
