...role of James eloquently and who is now artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada. As James, Bujones uses his particular aggressive variation on the Bournonville style effectively, and he is nicely complemented by Marianna Tcherkassky's sweet, limpid, almost blurred Sylph. The gorgeous sets by Desmond Heeley are drenchingly romantic, but Bruhn (wisely keeps sentiment in check onstage. A revival of Jerome Robbins' fierce, street-hip New York Export: Op. Jazz has corps kids of the '80s snapping their fingers just like gang squads of the West Side Story era. This ballet shows...
Reckless Waltzes. The evening does have some amusing nonsense and high spirits. The sets and costumes by Desmond Heeley are not only clever but look notably fresh. The music, ar ranged and conducted by John Lanch-berry, sounds like a serious ensemble rather than the pickup assortment that often accompanies dance. The Australians are a very handsome company. The girls are among the prettiest dancers around; the men are tall and athletic. John Meehan, who plays Count Danilo, the rich widow's reluctant lover, is positively coltish. Before Mr. Heeley's backcloth, under Mr. Benthall's guidance, it appears a mild, if merry, escapade, instinct with finesse...
...trained in doing it; and she does it, on the whole, quite well. The extent to which this--and little more--can be said about nearly the whole company is an indication of the extent to which this Twelfth Night is a group effort. Set, costumes (also by Mr. Heeley), and music are more important to the success of the production than is usually the case. This success rests finally on the subtlety with which these elements, and the acting, were made to combine and to complement each other and the text; probably, therefore, (though no one can be sure...
