Some experts fear that the increasing U.S. reliance on reconnaissance satellites is creating a strategic Achilles' heel. Satellites in space are fragile systems, their sensors and solar arrays vulnerable to physical attack and a variety of electromagnetic radiation. "There is a great risk," says one Pentagon official, "in the increasing dependence of our whole military system on vulnerable space-based systems." Others, however, point out that satellites are protected by the vast distances in space and that they can be "hardened" to withstand various sorts of radiation and even physical contact...

Slotline finally took off in 1982, when Duclos came out with his exaggerated version of the heel-and-toe-weighted putter. Last year the company introduced heel-and-toe-weighted irons and sold 12,000 sets in 15 months; 6,000 sets of its new metal woods were sold in seven months. In June, Slotline began construction of a new factory in St. Andrews, Scotland, the cradle of golf...

...Aerobic walking ranges from striding along to race walking, but all forms share the same goal: to give the body maximum propulsion while firming up thighs, hips and bottoms. Coaches like Howard Jacobson, 56, who heads the Walkers Club of America, teach tyro trudgers the race-walking technique. The heel of the front foot must touch the ground before the toe of the back foot pushes off; the leading leg must be straight at the knee as the body passes over it. The arm movement is a sprinter's, pumping diagonally across to the body's center line...
