...passel of Hollywood tender-seats to convey a captured dry-gulch artist (Glenn Ford) cross country to catch a train, but the bandit's gang is on the lurk, and the cowboys aren't having any. They leave the job to a drought-poor homesteader (Van Heflin) who needs the money ($200) to buy water for his cattle. From there on, it is hard to tell whether the moviemakers intended to parallel or to parody High Noon. ...Great Pleasure. TV's most ambitious drama mill, Playhouse 90, reopens this month with Jack Palance and Fashion Model Suzy Parker in Barnaby Conrad's Death of Manolete, followed by Rod Serling's study of the Hungarian revolt, The Dark Side of the Earth, with Van Heflin, and Marcel Pagnol's Topaze, with Ernie Kovacs...

If universality was Hals's hallmark, particularity was that of Pieter de Hooch. Not one artist working today could make a tennis match on a Westchester estate...
...dirt: a young girl (Peggy Ann Garner) comes to New York on the make to visit her uncle (Otto Kruger), and meets a famous Broadway producer (Van Heflin). Since Heflin's wife (Gene Tierney) is out of town, he rather indiscreetly lets the girl use their apartment to write in while he is at work. The day his wife gets home, they find the girl strung up in the bedroom and a suicide note on the typewriter table...
