Jail is the penalty for shouting "Heil Hitler!" ("Hail Hitler!") or any other Nazi slogan in Czechoslovakia. Last week Prague chuckled at the zeal of a town judge in Jagerndorf. Before the judge was brought a prosperous Silesian businessman arrested in peculiar circumstances. He pleaded that the wind had blown off his hat, that he was chasing it shouting "Mein Hütle!" ("My hat!"). "You were not!" snapped the arresting policeman. "You were yelling 'Heil Hitler!'" Taking the policeman's word, the judge sentenced the hat-chaser to one month in jail...
...Heil Hitler! Deutschland erwache! Juda verrecke!" they bellowed as he emerged waving his black felt hat. "Hail Hitler! Germany awake! Perish Juda!" Wasting not a second, Chancellor Hitler piled into his Mercedes beside the chauffeur, shot off between lines of police to form his Cabinet with record speed. There were rumors, doubtless untrue, but alarming, that General von Schleicher & Friends were about to attempt a "General's Putsch" and proclaim restoration of the House of Hohenzollern. In less than an hour the new Hitler Cabinet had met for a brief conference in the Reich Chancellery and Germans were staring...
While the German Empire lasted, its national anthem (sung to the same music as Britain's "God Save the King") was Heil dir im Siege skranz-"Hail thou whose victor's crown safeguards thy realm's re- nown; all hail to thee [i.e. the Kaiser]!" After the Fatherland became a Republic, its Socialist first President, Friedrich Ebert...

Fascist Adolf arrived, his smudge of a mustache twitching like a rabbit's nose with excitement. For once untroubled by the police. Hitlerites gathered in the street, shouting "Heil! Heil! Germany Awake!" as their leader appeared. No sooner had Herr Hitler disappeared through the doors than Dr. Josef Goebbels. who had nothing whatever to do with the interview beyond the fact that he is one of the leaders of the Hitlerites in the Reichstag (when the Reichstag is sitting) drove...
...Wesley hymn or a ballad of the people. The misfortune is that, like some other good things, it is not exclusively our own. In England it is known as "God save the king." And in the tuneful land of Germany the words people sing to it are "Heil dir im Siegerkranz, Herrscher des Volkes ganz." It would be somewhat of a pity if at some patriotic gathering Americans doffed their hats to the pilgrim fathers, while our cousins of England began, prayers for the salvation of their king, and some well meaning although recent, patriot, burst forth with a paean...
