YELLOW SUBMARINE. The Beatles are the nominal heroes of this fey animated film about a trip to Pepperland aboard a yellow submarine. Viewers, however, may well find themselves paying more attention to the visual puns and graphic artistry of Animator Heinz Edelmann...
...search of a visual mode for its subject, West German animator Heinz Edelmann furiously ransacks the past. From the mannerists, he borrows "shot colors" -red blending into orange, blue fading into green. He employs the whiplash and the curvilinear strokes of art nouveau. He features the upholstered monsters of comic strips, the impudent whimsy of Dada, the vibrating poster art of Peter Max. The eclecticism almost becomes a style of its own, and occasionally it is effective, as in Eleanor Rigby when "all the lonely people" appear as gritty newsreel figures who float by each other in a surrealistic frieze...
...Runner or Joyce's Ulysses, offers nothing in the way of stylistic innovation. Although advance publicity had promised something more inventive, it doesn't much matter. But, said Wuest, in thalidomide the structural combination of glutamic and phthalic acids is most unusual. Experiments undertaken in three laboratories have shown that this combination causes deformities...
...their most musical moments have been on records, particularly on their latest LP, The Who Sell Out. Cleverly framed in the breathless format of top-40 radio, this album mixes authentic station breaks, charmingly unpretentious songs (I Can't Reach You; Silas Stingy) and semi-satiric commercials (Heinz Baked Beans and Odorono, a deodorant). The album is The Who's imaginative antidote to the greatest danger they see in rock today: its solemnity...
