Great filmmakers create, or attract, great actors. Bergman's performers, especially his actresses--Ullmann, Eva Dahlbeck, Bibi and Harriet Andersson--have transformed his dour testaments into radiance. August (who will play the young Darth Vader's mother in the new Star Wars film) is an excellent heir to that magnificent tradition. Emotions don't play on her face; they live there in all their complexity and contradiction. They flush into a mischievous grin or produce tears as natural as a summer shower. Her face is a book. Read it for two hours and know the triumph and pain...

...Bill Bradley is definitely in. Bradley, the former New Jersey senator and NBA star, made it official on Tuesday and filed papers declaring that he'd seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2000. That pits Bradley directly against Vice President Al Gore, the most formidable Democratic heir apparent in a long time. "Evidently Bradley thinks he can do it," says TIME senior writer Eric Pooley. "He's really running for president, and not just positioning himself for vice president. He's the kind of guy who's used to being a star...

Another major concern is privacy. If screening reveals all the faults our flesh may be heir to, can that information be kept secret, so that it won't be used by potential employers or insurers to deny us a job or health coverage? Or, if we let our imaginations fly, by still other types of snoops--for example, an overzealous father eager to check out the genes of a potential son-in-law, just as he once might have checked the suitor's credit rating...

...Venetians, New England Conservatory first-year Stephen Beaudoin fares well as the cheerily optimistic and slightly dopey gondolier Marco, his fairly hearty (but once again too quiet) singing matched with an eye for physical comedy. Krishnan Unnikrishnan '02 is equally endearing and doltish as Giuseppe, fellow gondolier and possible heir-to-the-throne. Unnikrishnan hams it up remarkably well with lots of giggly smirks and "Aw, shucks" glances, but at times this silliness comes out as slightly effeminate camp--manly gondolieri do not typically bat their eyelashes when they're being serenaded by a lovely contadine. The two lead "lovely...

...convoluted tale of mistaken identities and star-crossed lovers that can only be understood when it is clearly and resoundingly sung by its main players. To summarize: it seems that years ago the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro had promised their daughter Casilda to an infant heir who was subsequently kidnapped but later found to be living as a gondolier in Venice. The operetta opens as the Duke and Duchess bring their daughter to Venice to claim her husband, only to find that not only is no one sure which of two gondoliers (Marco or Guiseppe) is the actual...
