...Jacksons are unsettled by the neighbors' treason, but for the lonely, timid wife Barbara (Rosemary Harris) the personal betrayal cuts far more deeply. She has almost no friends other than Helen Kroger (Dana Ivey), and cannot bear the thought that Helen has lied to her and feigned devotion. In torment, Barbara rages at the snoopers: Spying on spies, she rants, is the moral equivalent of spying. She aches with desire to tell Helen to flee. Her pain is more than loyalty: it is a burning need to legitimize her own feelings...

Many parishioners prefer the old traditions, however, and so do perhaps one- third of the nuns. Sister Mary Helen of Boston's Daughters of St. Paul is editor of a religious monthly. She wears a black habit, devotes three hours daily to prayers and believes that a Vatican decision means "it's a finished issue, and to keep hacking over it is like digging up somebody after they're buried." Says Sister Claire Patrice Fitzgerald, principal of a Catholic parochial school outside Los Angeles: "The Mother herself was obedient to her son, Christ. The authority of the church comes from...

...York and elsewhere, the composer, 61, has long been a conservative voice in American music. He speaks in a basically breezy 1940s tonality, which is leavened by a few more recent technical advances. In An American Oratorio, Rorem's style works effectively with gentle poems like Poe's To Helen, but it misses the force and majesty of Crane's bitter War Is Kind or Lazarus' noble ode to the Statue of Liberty, The New Colossus. The reach of the texts generally exceeds the composer's grasp. "The music was written in Nantucket during July of 1983," Rorem explains...

...rather be having sex with your wife or out bowling with your buddies?" Royko continued with a more pointed observation: "Nobody ever asks us about our needs, our frustrations . . . It's always, 'Madam, do you have your quota of orgasms?' " One putative expert on that subject, Cosmopolitan Editor Helen Gurley Brown, had her own reaction to the hubbub. Hurried, "lackluster" sex is rotten for everybody, she concluded, while good sex is "pretty terrific"-- second only, in her experienced opinion, to good food...

...RIDICULOUSLY over-talented cast can only emphasize the mediocrity of the material they are performing. Martin becomes a slightly befuddled middle-aged Englishman, the most the role permits. Harris creates a magnificent portrait of a woman slowly eroding from half-hidden anguish whenever Peter and Helen Kroger (Colin Fox and Dana Ivey) drop by. Fox plays a man quiet enough and thoughtful enough that you could almost believe he has a radio transmitter in the basement (which he does). Ivy's accurate portrayal of a loudmouthed, gregarious American makes the audience cringe: it is doubly funny because she has convinced...
