...This, coupled with the fact that Rosetta appears in every scene, lends to what is initially bizarre behavior--running helter-skelter through a factory simply because she was fired. The film creates a sense of continuity, because the world, from our view, does not exist as the town, her work or anything beyond Rosetta's skewed perspective. Tight camera work creates comfort, which transmutates into sympathy, although the Dardennes do not actively court affection. Rosetta makes uncomfortable choices, but, instead of condemning her character, blame is firmly placed on her society...

Granted that most of us don't have such options to begin with, there's still a universal theme in Wyatt's choice: the yearning for home in a helter-skelter era. This has been a millennium spent on the road. Colonizations and immigrations. Expeditions to the ocean floor, the earth's roof, the poles and the moon. Forced diasporas for populations in Africa, North America, Europe and elsewhere. Journeys across oceans for wars and police actions, and trips home in body bags. Forays around southern capes in tall ships and across Eurasia in caravans. And just as this millennium...

At first look, W.N.B.A. play was somewhat sloppy, but in the past few weeks it has tightened up. ...corroborate Fred Thompson's first-day claim that communist China had tried to "subvert" U.S. elections in 1996 with illegal campaign money, although Democrats confirmed that a classified briefing provided evidence to suggest China had at least tried to influence the congressional elections last year. But in its helter-skelter way, the committee began to construct a coherent tale. Asian money--specifically from Indonesia's Lippo Group and its onetime executive Huang--had infiltrated Democratic coffers longer, deeper and with more political strings attached than had previously been known...

...ahead of the scientific thought of his day. He correctly attributes lunar light to solar rays reflected from the Earth. Like Galileo, he risks ecclesiastical wrath by rejecting the belief that fossils were deposited on mountaintops by Noah's flood (because, he argues, a deluge would have scattered them helter-skelter rather than leaving them in orderly assemblages). And though his mind-set remains medieval, he demonstrates a decidedly modern curiosity about nature, an openness to theorizing and, above all, a willingness to dispute dogma in lively debates with an imagined "adversary." Had he ever published them, his scientific musings...
