River House residents, say goodbye to Hemenway. Faculty of Arts and Sciences officials announced yesterday new upgrades for the Malkin Althetic Center (MAC), perhaps making the trek to the Law School’s popular Hemenway Gymnasium a thing of the past. The MAC, located at 39 Holyoke St., got a face lift this past October updating its century-old infrastructure. By the end of spring break, officials said, new treadmills, elliptical machines, and stationary bicycles will be added, each featuring its own satellite television screen—the reason many undergraduates make the trip to the Law School...

...aerobic step block. Both gyms now offer a number of specialized dance style classes, including such gems as MTV Dance and ZUMBA! “We always want to keep the programming new and fresh,” said Cristina N. Hoff, fitness program manager at Hemenway, of the new options. These classes have more going for them than their novelty, in that they’re easy for out-of-shape Harvard students. The classes, termed “low-impact” because they are easy on the joints, combine various styles of dance with aerobics for stretching...

...policy of having women-only hours is unfair to those who live in the Quad, where a fifth of Harvard’s undergraduate population has access to only one nearby gym—the QRAC. Other students at Harvard have access to at least two—Hemenway and the Malkin Athletic Center—both of which are far superior to the QRAC. Yet, Harvard decided three weeks ago, in a process that was utterly lacking in transparency, to limit what little Quadlings have by mandating that men not be allowed to use the facility during a range...

...fact that the two-hour slots occur during what many students—contrary to Gibson’s claim—consider to be prime gym time. Quadlings looking to lift before morning classes or before dinner are faced with two options: foregoing their workout or trekking to Hemenway or the MAC. So far, the attendance at women-only hours has been underwhelming. But Aljawhary feels confident that, as word spreads, more sneaker-clad women will turn up to sweat in single-sex solidarity...

There’s that new-paint smell and some spiffier bathrooms, but the improvements to the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC) are mostly too subtle to impress students, according to gym-goers interviewed yesterday. After the MAC closed for improvements last March, athletes migrated to Hemenway Gymnasium. Students said working out at the TV-outfitted, air-conditioned law school gym fed high expectations for the MAC’s re-opening Tuesday. “I thought they were going to do something with it like add another floor or something crazy like that,” said Shane...
