...centuries-old mosques. By some accounts, at least 85% of Old Kashgar will be knocked down. Many expect the ancient quarter, considered one of Central Asia's best preserved sites of Islamic architecture, to disappear almost entirely before the end of the year. "This is the Uighurs' Jersualem," says Henryk Szadziewski of the Washington-based Uyghur Human Rights Project. "By destroying it, you rip the soul out of a people." (Read a brief history of the Uighurs...
...G.D.R. fashion was supposed to be of practical value, plain, ornamentless, modern, straight," says Henryk Gericke, one of the curators of the exhibition. "It was supposed to reflect the ideal image of the confident East German working woman." But when members of the Mob were wielding the scissors, they took fashion in a whole new direction. Passersby who looked into the windows of the shops in which the independent label ironically dubbed "Chic, Charmant and Dauerhaft" (Chic, Charming and Durable) held its first fashion shows witnessed scenes that couldn't have been further removed from the wholesome, clean style...

Suddenly, the music clashes and all the guests let go of their cups, which (because they are tied to the ceiling by invisible wire) then swing in unison for the remainder of the ballet. This stark, surprising introduction immediately drew me into the piece. The ever-present wine glasses...
...into the standard trip-hop forms; bebop, drum 'n' bass and harsh techno beats all find their way into an eminently digestible mix. The band has undeniable indie cred: they've sampled Charlie Parker, scored a British hit with a song based on the work of classical composer Henryk Grecki and had their songs remixed by Autechre, Bola and Global Communication. Despite all this, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better three-minute pop song than "B Line," their single from this summer...
