...biggest news at Saratoga last week came when Industrialist Henryk de Kwiatkowski announced that his Belmont Stakes winner, Conquistador Cielo, had been syndicated to a group of breeders for $36.4 million, making him the most expensive horse in history. Meanwhile, all week long, a favored few took their reserved seats inside Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion and fascinated onlookers gathered before outdoor monitors to view the auctions of untried yearlings for stratospheric sums. In one wild bidding session, a world-record filly price of $2.1 million was paid for a daughter of The Minstrel. After four tense evenings, traders had ponied...
After one such visit, a clergyman last week reported Solidarity Leader Lech Walesa to be in "perfect" mental health and "full of enthusiasm." The priest, Henryk Jankowski of Gdansk, was allowed to meet with Walesa to arrange the baptism of his seventh child, Maria Victoria, born on Jan. 27. The photograph of his wife Danuta and their child, the first known to exist, was taken by a Solidarity photographer and smuggled out to the West. The archbishop of Wroclaw, Henryk Gulbinowicz, is trying to organize a baptism for the infant with the entire Walesa clan in attendance. As for whether the proud father would be allowed to participate by the hard-line government, the archbishop can offer only a prayer...
...first snow of winter fell on Warsaw last week, the honor guard stepped smartly up to Poland's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A crowd of 2,000, including a row of officials, watched in respectful silence as President Henryk Jablonski solemnly placed a wreath at the base of the granite monument. In hundreds of towns and cities throughout the Western world, Armistice Day is observed in much the same fashion. But the Polish ceremony marked a significant break with the Communist past, a symbol of rising patriotism that was finally acknowledged by the government, despite the possibility...
