When the generals wanted to explain their crackdown to the West Germans, Rakowski was naturally the man they sent to Bonn. Martial law, he said, was necessary to prevent the outbreak within "a matter of weeks" of a civil war that would have provoked a Soviet invasion. ...Pacific air, cuts and slices of gable, white posts by the sea, sudden drop-offs of hill or throughway-these images of the California coast have found their way into them, but in a condensed and fully digested idiom whose sources, far back in the early 20th century, are Henri Matisse and Piet Mondrian...

Leaving all his equipment behind, Bureau stuffed 30 rolls of film in his snow boots and rode an unheated train in subzero weather to Berlin with L'Express Correspondent Jacques Renard. ...Nord, the drama has more power than it possibly could in a 3,000-seat opera house. Brook has chosen his singers as much for their acting skills as for their voices. By tightening the plot he creates dramatic situations beyond anything envisioned by Bizet's librettists (Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy) or even by Mérim&233;e. In this version, Carmen and Micaela, Don José's girlfriend from back home, are direct rivals and have a real fight when Carmen carves a bloody cross on Micaela's forehead...
