...Herbert Putnam '83, at present librarian of Congress, has been both a lawyer and a librarian. After graduating from Harvard in 1883 he engaged in library work at Minneapolis. In the meanwhile he studied law and began to practice in Boston in 1891. In 1895 he returned to library work, becoming librarian of the Boston Public Library. From this position he was called in 1899 to become Librarian of Congress. Mr. Putnam has received the degree of Litt.D. from Bowdoin in 1898, from Yale in 1907, and from several other colleges.
