...Pricked by reports that gambling would be "wide open" at Saratoga Springs during this season's Diamond Jubilee race meeting, Lieutenant Governor Charles Poletti of New York last week gave assurance that nothing of the sort would be allowed; in Governor Herbert Lehman's absence on vacation, his office would expect the law to be enforced. As in years gone by, Saratoga's gambling public was thus obliged to bank its own games in its own parlors, or travel by night to hideouts...

...temporarily cut in two at the Ticino River when Red bombers "destroyed" a strategically important bridge. Toiling engineers threw a temporary bridge across the Ticino in 16 hours-"a fine page in their glorious tradition," crowed Virginio Gayda's Giornale d'ltalia. New York Times Correspondent Herbert L. Matthews sourly commented that it was "evidently a very solid and complicated bridge," for he had seen Spanish Loyalists in a fraction of that time build structures strong enough to carry tanks across the wider Ebro...

Beau Geste (Paramount), an attempt to give voice to Herbert Brenon's 1926 silent classic of the French Foreign Legion, follows its original so relentlessly that it resembles nothing so much as a talking mummy. Archeologists will recognize scene for scene the progress of the Geste brothers from happy Brandon Abbas to unhappy Morocco, while younger cinemaddicts are following less than breathlessly the mystery over who stole that sapphire of sapphires, the Blue Water. Both will be apt to find the fraternal devotion of the Gestes rather mawkish, Actor Gary Cooper something short of the Beau ideal. Although...
