...sentence from one of Miller's most mailable literary essays is typical: "Joyce, the mad baboon, herein gives the works to the patient antlike industry of man which has accumulated about him like an iron ring of dead learning." In a collection of aphorisms, the reader learns that "in life's ledger, there is no such thing as frozen assets." If the sage of Big Sur were to be judged from this book alone, it would be hard to justify Editor Durrell's prophecy that Miller may one day be classed with Whitman and Blake...

...some point last spring, a financial "angel" entered the picture, and herein lies another of the elements of mystery surrounding the Program. He has wished to remain anonymous, and so far this wish has been fulfilled. The scuttlebutt has it, however, that he is a wealthy alumnus who remembers his own freshman year with something less than enthusiasm, and who approached the Administration with a desire to improve the lot of future Harvard initiates. Quite likely, his generosity has by now been supplemented by support from other sources. At any rate, money does not seem to have been a serious...

...special one-man show contained a dozen paintings by the American artist Edward Hopper. This should have pleased those with conservative tastes. Hopper chose ordinary, commonplace subjects and painted them almost realistically. But the almost is crucial; for herein lies his personal contribution. Somehow he was able to capture masterfully the moods of lone-liness. The best-known item in this dozen was "The Bootleggers." In it, Hopper painted his clapboard house not white, not gray, but light blue; and this bluishness works an ineffable effect on the beholder...

...have to score, and herein lies the varsity's continual dilemma. The Crimson, with its quantity of good linemen, has only tallied six times in three Ivy League games and has maintained only a slightly better record in non-League action. Against Penn, both of the varsity's goals were scored by Roger Tuckerman in the first four minutes of the first quarter and for the next 56 minutes of play, the Crimson was unable to penetrate the Quakers' strong defense...
