Grisham had a personal reason for concocting this novel legal theory. In March 1995, William Savage, an acquaintance of Grisham's, was gunned down at the cotton gin where he worked, out-side Hernando, Mississippi; the next day, convenience-store clerk Patsy Byers was shot and paralyzed in nearby Ponchatoula, Louisiana. ...direction and setting, though, is always terrific. The movie begins with up-close shots of Harvard Square. Out of Town News is one of the many guest stars. The Cayman Islands are gorgeous and lush. And the splashy scenes of Memphis--near the Hernando De Soto bridge, on the monorail to Mud Island, on the streets of downtown--are realistic and eye-catching, quite a combination. If you've never seen Memphis, you've got a treat in store...

...Hernando de Soto Bridge--That M-shaped bridge in the background. It leads over to Arkansas, birthplace of the president (as a sign on the bridge lets you know). At night, the bridge is fully lighted and can be seen from the air. Quite a sight for weary airplane travelers circling down--usually on Northwest. Memphis is a hub, after all.
