Born in Holland in 1802 of French parents, Constantin Guys began his career as an illustrator about the time that the fateful Hernani was produced. As Parisian as Baudelaire in his tastes, it was his fate to spend much of his active life in Turkey, Greece, Spain, Algeria, the Crimea, as a staff artist for the Illustrated London News. He died in Paris in 1892, having spent the last seven years of his life in bed with a broken leg. He was intimate with Thackeray, Théophile Gautier, Delacroix, Manet, Baudelaire.
