Suppose, says Toynbee, a pixie Lady of the Lake sees her inviolate body of water sullied by "an audacious backwoodsman's canoe." Acting as a Zealot, she will use her supernatural power to freeze the water solid. As a Herodian, she will eventually drain her lake bed dry.
