Clinton will, of course, be unequal to the task. The assassination left Kennedy frozen in time, immune to criticism and free of the slow decline that awaits any politician in retirement. He lives on in a heroic legend that no later stories of his personal shortcomings can dent; it is an outline that even John F. Kennedy himself, were he alive today, could not fill...
...right to complain about a market in embryos. The assumption behind the in vitro industry is that some people's genetic material is worth more than others' and deserves to be reproduced at any expense. Millions of low-income babies die every year from preventable ills like dysentery, while heroic efforts go into maintaining yuppie zygotes in test tubes at the unicellular stage. This is the dread "nightmare" of eugenics in familiar, marketplace form -- which involves breeding the best-paid instead of the best. Cloning technology is an almost inevitable by-product of in vitro fertilization. Once you decide...
...long hiatus has also given the format new room to roam. Patricia Limerick, a professor at the University of Colorado and a leading revisionist historian, sees the end of the cold war as liberating. "We don't have to create an image and an ideology of ourselves as heroic expanders of the frontier and innocents who fight evil," she says. "All of that cold war fervor that drove the old westerns has lifted, so you can do more complex and interesting westerns." At a time when gritty urban realism and literal-minded docudramas hold sway, westerns are a refreshing departure...
...film begins with Max emerging heroic and unharmed from a gory, chaotic crash site, suddenly convinced that he is beyond mortal concerns: fearless. He even informs God of this development: "You want to kill me but you can't." Feeling thus elevated, Max disengages from his former life, abusing his beautiful wife and son and flaunting various conventions of society. While Max gets his thrills from risking his life periodically and hanging out with other brush-with-death-survivor buddies, his devoted and one-dimensional wife (Isabella Rosellini) is apparently confined to the house, as well as to a limited...
While I agree with Allen that we as Asian men have to live with some rather vicious stereotypes, and that few models of heroic Asian men exist in the mainstream American media, I think that he is losing sight of an important point: in the process of confronting what the mainstream does to us (and to all of our brothers and sisters in the community of color), we should not forget that we also have a responsibility to Asian women to acknowledge, confront and overcome sexism within the Asian community. These two tasks cannot be prioritized, one over the other...
