...speeches were chosen with care and were representative not only of political debating but also of well-known works in English poetry and prose. They dealt with former political problems, with important issues of past times, and with heroic deeds and actions; one or two were selections chosen to play upon the sympathies of the audience. The competitors gave evidence of careful preparation and, in nearly every case, spoke forcibly and with confidence...

...Farge" by Mr. Ernst is notable as a triumph over limitations of space. Though but a trifle over three pages long, it lacks scarcely one of the properties which the current practice of our best ten-cent magazines proves helpful toward securing publication. Local color, uncouth dialect, primal passion, heroic resignation, a moral struggle, and a savage fight march in perfect order to an artistically vague ending. A fit companion to "Pete La Farge" is "The Morrigan." Mr. Schenck piles on lurid horrors with the ungrudging hand of love. Beside his sketch, Mr. Proctor's clever "Page from Gorky" seems...

At several points on the summit the clearings reached...

Literally hundreds of thousands of lives have been annihilated by the force of the eruptions and the fires and the sea. Lower Italy is panic stricken; mere words cannot describe the awful state into which the country has been plunged. Heroic efforts to relieve the distress are being made by scores of men and women in the vicinity whose lives were spared, but more money and more provisions are needed. It is right that this community give of its abundance at this time and contribute liberally to this, the noblest of causes--the relief of human grief and suffering...
