...from the moment Bolt sticks his head out the window of a speeding truck and feels the breeze of freedom and free will, the picture snaps to life and instantly acquires heart (Lasseter's favorite movie organ). Of course each character gets to show a heroism all the more special for being displayed without special effects. Indeed, Rhino's climactic declaration of purpose - that "All my dreaming has prepared me for this moment" - might be the motto, not just of this very satisfying film, but of the Disney-Pixar animators. They're smart kids who dream for a living...
...This will spur people to do more and encourage billions around the world to mobilize themselves and show acts of heroism in the fight against the common enemy: the destruction of the environment. In my homeland, the Philippines, Odette Alcantara has been actively involved in the Zero Basura Olympics (basura is Spanish and Filipino for garbage), recycling, tree-planting, clearing waterways, rivers, lakes and seas, plus teach-ins, seminars and speeches to tell people the importance of protecting the environment, starting immediately in their own homes. ...firsthand look at such heroism this summer when I joined a team of international researchers led by Dahl-Jensen at the NEEM camp in Greenland. NEEM stands for North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling (the acronym is Danish, as are the leaders of the project), and the scientists are digging deep into the Greenland ice--more than a mile and a half deep to be precise--to try to understand its pedigree. Depth is time, and the lower you go, the further back in history you travel. As ice formed in Greenland, year after cold year, bits of atmosphere were trapped...
