...History and Geography of Human Genes is primarily a study of the distribution of human genes and presents a kind of ``global family tree.'' This is far from a study of the distribution of intelligence among human beings, which is the focus of Charles Murray and Richard Herrnstein's book. All humans are closely related. Desperate attempts to reduce the impact of The Bell Curve [which holds that intelligence is determined by heredity, not environment] are so blatantly irresponsible as to be near to criminal...
Mention The Bell Curve in polite company these days, and it may not be polite for long. Critics have pummeled the best-selling book by Charles Murray and the late Richard Herrnstein, which blames genetics for the gap between the average I.Q. of whites and blacks. But most of the assailants haven't noticed that perhaps their best weapon lies almost unused right under their noses. At about the same time that Murray threw his Curve, Princeton University Press put out The History and Geography of Human Genes by population geneticists Luca Cavalli-Sforza, Paolo Menozzi and Alberto Piazza...
...this mature way of managing the trauma of persistent racist victimization of Black folks in American life (trauma recently reinforced by the racist discourse found in The Bell Curve, by Charles A. Murray '65 and the late Harvard professor Richard J. Herrnstein), you should be formulating week-by-week and month-by-month numerous projects to assist that long-haul task of outfitting the Black poor and underclass youth to read adequately, to manage math, to replace vulgarity with beauty, to overcome hyper-macho, anarchic and anti-humanistic values and personal identities...
...theories presented in The Bell Curve, by Charles Murray and Richard Herrnstein, are not only offensive but also grossly incorrect. We attended and endorsed the Nov. 4, 1994 demonstration in order to express our outrage about the "scientific" ideas put forth in this book. The BSA should be commended for bringing to light the truth about this book and the actual motivation of its authors. Today's teach-in is an excellent method of encouraging students to learn more about The Bell Curve and its gaping flaws. We are upset that the academic community at Harvard did not respond...
What affirmative action affirms, covertly -- the hidden premise, growing more powerful -- is a proposition not distant from the conclusions of Messrs. Herrnstein and Murray in The Bell Curve. In an America where all the genes of the world have settled and hope to succeed, the only way to justify open-ended affirmative action for blacks is to shake one's head and say, "Well, you know, we have to do this: African Americans are inherently inferior." Who would have thought the mind-set of a Kluxer would turn up as U.S. government policy...
