...Hewlett-Packard, the electronics company, owns a dozen vacation spots for its workers to use, including a country house in Japan, a lakeside resort in Scotland and several ski chalets in the German Alps. Hospital Corp. of America pays its employees to keep fit by giving them bonuses for every mile they jog and every lap they swim. Control Data, the computer manufacturer, and Reader's Digest have community gardens on company grounds where employees can grow their own vegetables. American manufacturing is still less than it could be, or must be if U.S. factories are to regain world markets. Says Hewlett-Packard President John Young: "A strong manufacturing sector is central to this country's ability to compete. Hewlett-Packard offered to donate ten machines to each of 14 California high school districts, and last month Digital announced it would be giving $1.1 million worth of equipment to 46 schools in New England...
Although the New Orleans fair was supposed to be a show for software, the machine manufacturers could not be overlooked. The exhibition's main floor at the Superdome was dominated by the stands of the largest computer companies. Hewlett-Packard, Digital Equipment, NCR and IBM erected booths that dwarfed those of all but the biggest software firms. Apple's stand featured a 12-ft. scale model of its new Macintosh machine, and Chairman Steven Jobs delivered a keynote speech that tried to cast the event as a shootout between Apple...
