...1980s, Microsoft's entry into the world of palmtop computing began only three years ago, when the company rolled out Windows CE, a relative of the company's ubiquitous operating system now found on more than 90% of personal computers. Microsoft then signed up 10 manufacturers, including Hewlett-Packard, Sharp and Philips, to make hand-held computers to its specifications. Following the huge success of the Palm Pilot, the tiny organizer that uses a plastic pen instead of a keyboard, Microsoft enlisted another eight manufacturers to make a competing version of a similar unit. ...good news is that not all brain-dead computers are created equal. Hewlett-Packard had the best rating in the survey; its computers worked on startup 92 percent of the time. By contrast, 17 percent of AST users had a bad out-of-box experience. Interestingly enough, AST users, while reporting the most initial problems, were also the least likely to call tech support -- a level of diminished expectations that may explain how PC makers can ship nonfunctional products and still make the big bucks...

To fund BETA, Leigh says the group relied on support from private foundations such as the Planetary Society and on sample parts donated by companies like Hewlett Packard, Micron and Intel...
...risk and such distribution should be expanded to cover the campus. In addition, in every House there should be at least one tutor trained to help those suffering from the early stages of RSI and who can help students design their work spaces more ergonomically. Companies including Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard have specialists on ergonomics to help employees who are feeling RSI pain; Harvard students work extended hours at the keyboard, too, so it would be reasonable to have trained tutors performing this educational role here. Most of all, few students realize how quickly RSI can set in and information...
