Club Passim? It's that sunken whitewashed place across from the Coop, below the map store. Tom Waits got his start there. In its heyday Club Passim (then Club 47) was a familiar nightspot for Harvard students: "It was the House of Blues without the booze," says co-founder Betsy Siggins Schmidt. Over the years though, student nightlife has fragmented as venues multiplied, and the Club's Americana format has become less immediate than it was when folk musicians were creating a vocal canon of protest in the days of Vietnam and the civil rights movement...

...outside observers, it was one more example of how far the A.M.A., and by extension the entire medical profession, has fallen. In the group's heyday in the early 1960s, 70% of practicing physicians were members, and the A.M.A. wielded enough political clout to rewrite Medicare laws. Now roughly 30% of physicians belong, and the organization has been dogged by bungled decisions, like the short-lived deal it made two years ago to endorse Sunbeam products...

...best part of Dunn's speech was when she passed the ball over to Steve Largent. He provides the Republican Party with the much-needed gridiron experience that it has lacked since the heyday of Gerald Ford. I hoped he would open his speech as if he were on the Simpsons--"Hi, my name is Steve Largent. You may know me from such NFL films as 'The 1987 AFC Playoffs,' or 'The 1985 Raiders/Seahawks Classic'"--but he didn't. Instead he talked a lot about God and Christmas, and how these things have led him to believe in America...

...Pyramid of the Moon and flanked by the even larger Pyramid of the Sun and other ceremonial buildings, was the core of a much larger metropolis. Indeed, at 8 sq. mi. and with an estimated population of 150,000, Teotihuacan was the largest city in Mesoamerica in its heyday (about A.D. 500) and one of the six largest in the world--larger even than Rome. Its political power reached all the way to Mayan city-states hundreds of miles away, with outposts as far away as Guatemala...

Video-game makers have been capitalizing on their popular characters since the arcade's heyday (Remember Pac-Man bed sheets?) but have never come close to the level of mass-market merchandising now a habit for movie studios like Disney. That may change. More and more, PC-game companies are peddling their properties outside the virtual realm. The result: toys like this creature from StarCraft, the year's top-selling CD-ROM game. And move over, Barbie: a Lara Croft doll debuts this month. Online Help for Movers...
