...create opportunities for innovations.” Orlowski also said the study findings indicate that endowment size has nothing to do with sustainability. “Most of the efforts that are going on here have significant environmental and economic benefits for the University,” said HGCI Co-Chair Thomas E. Vautin, who is also Harvard’s associate vice president for facilities and environmental services. Higher scoring schools had increased “collaboration between administrations and students,” Orlowski said. “Each group brings a lot to the table...

...farm in Minnesota, indirectly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Harvard will provide enough RECs to offset 10 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions produced this year by the 30 buildings, which is the equivalent of removing 2000 cars from the road over the course of a year, according to the HGCI Web site. Emig could not provide cost estimates for the RECs. Over 3,500 people at the Faculty of Arts and Science signed the pledge, and 18 FAS buildings won renewable energy credits. Pforzheimer House led the undergraduate residence halls with a 64 percent participation rate while William James Hall...

...this is the first time such a program has been attempted at the University. The project was initially proposed by two undergraduates—Tatianna Bartch ’06 and Jeremy P. Tchou ’08—as a part of the Harvard Green Campus Initiative (HGCI)’s Resources Efficiency Program. The initiative to recycle waste oil generated by Annenberg’s deep fryers gained support from Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS) and Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO). “It’s a great environmental project. Organizers of the Harvard Green Campus Initiative (HGCI) say they were not anticipating several thousand members of the Harvard community to pledge their support for a new energy-conservation initiative. The results proved a pleasant surprise. Jaclyn E. Emig, HGCI’s Longwood campus coordinator, said the program’s following this fall was more than she had hoped for. The Campus Sustainability Pledge campaign garnered support from 4,300 students and faculty. “It exceeded our expectations because we had more pledges than the ‘Go Cold Turkey’ campaign last year...

...Harvard Green Campus Initiative (HGCI) is little changed from when I was involved in it in that it prefers to labor like Sisyphus rather than acknowledge that it is easier to change infrastructure than it is to change ingrained behavior. It would not be too hard to install more LED lights or master switches for suites that turn off all the lights and power outlets over holidays. This would save a lot of power and be a lot more durable than any marketing campaign. Similarly, extra glazing for windows to provide better insulation would go a lot further than buying...
