...commotion mounted, the Marcoses left Hickam Air Force Base after a month-long stay and moved into a $1.5 million beachfront estate in the exclusive eastern Honolulu suburb of Niu. The new home offers little of the imperial style to which the dethroned couple is accustomed: more than 50,000 cars a day roar along a four-lane highway just outside the house, while sundry beachcombers, joggers and fishermen can peer at the grounds from the nearby beach. Then, late in the week, Panamanian President Eric Arturo Delvalle also refused to take the homeless leader, after his safe haven there seemed virtually guaranteed. Delvalle apparently made the decision in response to critics who said the issue...

...evidence of misdeeds mounted, the Reagan Administration sought to extricate itself from the quest for Marcos' wealth. By week's end the U.S. was considering asking a federal court in Hawaii to decide what to do with the crates sitting at Hickam. The Administration stoutly maintained that the Marcos party had no legal immunity from court suits or congressional inquiries. "No laws will be bent," said a Justice Department official. "Nobody is above...
