The University of Toronto scientist had spent his career trying to sift out the misshapen clumps of proteins thought to cause neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that hid in a sandbox of normal proteins. In 2002 he finally succeeded, using a chemical agent to alter normal proteins but not so-called aggregated misfolded ones, leaving the clumps easier to detect.
