That night, Charlie gets a call from Irene, who had high-tailed it from the New York wedding reception to California. Twelve hours later Charlie, too, has made the trans-continental voyage. Under the California sun we see Charlie--proudly sporting a hideous yellow blazer stop a black turtleneck shirt--and Irene eating lunch in L.A. Not surprisingly, he soon proposes marriage, and they decide that the song playing the background will be their song...

There are three main reasons for this Orwellian simple-is-befuddling approach. One is that the present tax code is such a hideous snarl. By Treasury count, under the new plan, "more than 65 categories of preferential tax treatment would be eliminated or curtailed." Just describing what they are is no easy task. On the Eastern side, a pall hangs over the city, reflected in the rigorously functional, regimented gray apartment blocks that line the streets. Propelled by the engine of the postwar Wirtschaftswunder, the capitalist Federal Republic of Germany is a sporty blond racing...

...looking at freaks, she now stared. She began to prowl the streets of New York-late at night, when the train stations were "deep, empty, odoriferous-'like pits of hell''' and when the freaks-came out. Soon she became a regular at Hubert's Freak Museum. Staring at the hideous figures, she felt fear run its course through her body and she was determined to conquer...
