Gide published his first book, anonymously and at his own expense, when he was 21. The Notebooks of Andre Walter (1891) was the thinly disguised story of his own neurotic love for his cousin Emmanuele. Novelist-Critic Charles Huysmans promptly labeled it "a product of hideous vulgarities." Few people read it and fewer still bought it; but it admitted Gide to Paris' literary set. It brought him the acquaintance of Maeterlinck, D'Annunzio, Whistler, Gauguin, Rodin and Mallarme...

...Suite in E Flat for Military Band, by Gustav Holst, which was played with finesse and showed off to best advantage the Band's excellent brass sonority, as well as the adeptness of its wind section in soft passages. ...hideous Flemish masterpiece, newly acquired by London's National Gallery, looked strangely familiar. Flemish Master Quentin Matsys (1466-1530), who had painted the original, had intended it as a caricature of Margaret (nicknamed "Pocket-mouth"), Countess of Tyrol. About the only change Tenniel made, agreed the London News Chronicle, was to add "ermine to the headdress and sausage curls to the forehead." Otherwise little was otherwise...
