Avodah Books boils down to one man, Sammy Harkham, a big, bearded guy in his twenties who means to knock you out with aesthetic overload. "Ergot" is not a book to take on a plane to lose yourself in a great story. Many of the contributions couldn't even be called comix and most of the rest have nonsensical, free-associative narratives. Collage and full-page illustration mix with...

...just a high-end phenomenon. Earlier this year, Gap and Old Navy decided to devote floor space in their stores to maternity wear, which they had been selling only online. H&M has also got into the act. Its Mama collection is swiftly gaining notoriety among bargain hunters as the Scandinavian phenom expands throughout the U.S. Other retailers are spiffing up their maternity departments: Target now offers a collection designed by Liz Lange, a former editor at Vogue magazine and the first designer to show a maternity collection at New York's fashion week. According to Neuhaus, sales of high-end TVs costing between €4,000 and €7,000 are up 15-20% this year. Digital cameras, laptops and even €800 espresso machines are selling fast. "Price is a secondary consideration," Neuhaus says. "People want the latest technology." While the DAX stock index has shot...

And her agents think she has done something unique, as Estee Lauder is a prestige brand--that is, one that can be bought only at high-end department stores and not the corner Wal-Mart. Similarly, Gucci's Ford, who is widely praised for his seeming inattention to the color of a model's skin, has signed Indian model Ujjwala Raut to represent Yves Saint Laurent cosmetics, and Lancome has hired Japanese-German-British Devon Aoki...
