Last week was not the first time that Thomas, who claims he wants to be judged on his ideas, has used racial buzzwords to confuse his critics. During his Senate confirmation hearings in 1991, for example, he charged that Anita Hill and her supporters were subjecting him to a "high-tech lynching." Nor was it the first time he has claimed that his conservatism grew from lifting himself out of poverty by his bootstraps, rather than from bald political opportunism. "Having had to accept my blackness in the cauldron of ridicule from some of my black schoolmates under segregation, then...

Elkhart, Ind., was spotlighted as the "Recreational Vehicle Capital" of the U.S. I've had to deal with the Elkhart agency enforcing child support for 14 years. Yet even in the high-tech '90s, it is not yet computerized. It's been frustrating to cope with an overloaded system bogged down by a lack of commonplace technology. Perhaps instead of funding an RV museum that no one visits, Elkhart's city fathers could better spend the town's money on modernizing an antiquated system that forces dependent children to do without and allows deadbeat dads to go free. Sony consistently churns out artfully designed high-tech gear. But sometimes even the king of the audio-video world messes up. Take its new Watchman Color TV ($109, due out next month). It's lightweight, looks great, and comes with a clever neckstrap that doubles as an antenna. But painfully poor reception and a tiny 2.2-in. screen make it a better paperweight than...

...encouraged their patients to walk during labor. Then they started using electronic monitors on a regular basis. But the monitors, which measure the baby's condition during delivery, tethered the mother to a machine, making it impossible for her to walk. Physicians and nurses became more dependent on the high-tech instruments--though studies have shown that using a specialized stethoscope during routine deliveries is just as good at measuring a baby's vital signs as an electronic monitor...
