Looks like checkout time for Hilton Corp.'s Stephen Bollenbach. After an entertaining nine-month battle, replete with name calling, to buy ITT and its prized Sheraton properties and Caesars hotels and casinos, Bollenbach came up empty. But the escape from Hilton cost ITT its independence. Fearful that ITT shareholders would accept Hilton's $70 a share offer in two weeks, ITT chairman Rand Araskog pulled a rabbit out of a hat by agreeing to sell ITT to Starwood Lodging for $82 a share. That's 17% more than Hilton's "final" offer...
...look at the freaks! Come gape at the geeks!" The minute those accusatory opening lines are sung, by 20 actors in bleacher seats facing the audience, you fear the worst. Side Show, the first new musical of the Broadway season, tells the real-life story of Daisy and Violet Hilton, Siamese twins who became a hit vaudeville act in the 1930s. Everybody is curious about such human oddities--and aren't you ashamed...
Always more interested in making a difference than in making a movie, the Oscar-winning actress briefly returned to Hollywood to narrate a film on depression (her mother committed suicide when Fonda was 12) to be shown at a fund-raising lunch this week at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. At the lunch, other celebrities such as Mike Wallace and Liza Minnelli hope to start doing for depression what Elizabeth Taylor did for AIDS...
Next stop is Las Vegas. Nevada recently granted BET a gaming license. With Hilton as a partner, Johnson plans to open a $200 million SoundStage Hotel and Casino. Hilton will run the operations while BET enlists top black entertainment. There are also MSBET, the company's Website venture with Microsoft; a line of clothing launched in February; and a BET Visa card. Johnson may even try to market home mortgages under the BET brand...
