Built for New Jersey's Wallace Laboratories, makers of meprobamate (best known as Miltown), the model illustrated both basic brain physiology and the effects of various tranquilizing drugs, as reported by Dr. Harold E. Himwich of Galesburg State Research Hospital in Illinois. To spell out his findings, a 16-minute recording was played, while a tape of recorded instructions controlled the illustrative lights in the model. To the visiting G.P.s, most of whom had given no thought to the brain's anatomy since their first year in medical school, the technical jargon was almost as forbidding...
...metrazol, a drug with a camphor-like action, he goes into convulsions, stops breathing, shock ensues. Such shock blots out hallucinations, or delusions of persecution. Main trouble with insulin or metrazol treatment, however, is that the profundity and length of the shock cannot be easily controlled. Dr. Harold Edwin Himwich and associates of Albany Medical College reported in the Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine that they had devised a new, safer method for depriving the brain of oxygen. They simply attached a five-quart breathing bag filled with pure oxygen to the patient's face...
Last week three Yale investigators- Drs. Harold Edwin Himwich & Louis Herman Nahum, assisted by N. Rakieten -reported to the International Congress of the Federation of Societies for Experimental Biology at Rome, that alcohol loads the body with lactic acid. If drinking women bear daughters and abstainers bear sons, thence arises a problem in progeny for eugenists and sociologists to resolve...
