...curious thing is that, in hind sight, the once criticized swings between abstract and figurative in Diebenkorn's work seem not to matter. Beyond them, one sees the profound consistency with which he has pursued his essential lan guage as a painter - how the zigzagging pipes under the basin in Corner of Studio - Sink, 1963, relate to the angular chops of dark shadow in his earlier Berkeley landscapes, and are exquisitely refined in the later Ocean Parks; how the vitreous transparencies of his Californian rooms in the late '50s, gridded by mul lions and tabletops, become the sharp...

...mistake was to send in as a negotiator Major Pierre Gallopin, who had served as a military adviser to the Chad government in its efforts to wipe out the very rebels who captured Claustre. Habre ordered his execution-reportedly by slitting open his abdomen and tying him to the hind legs of a camel. Four later envoys escaped alive, but were no more successful than Galopin in liberating Claustre. At one point, France delivered an $880,000 ransom in cash and promised another $ 1.4 million in the form of nonmartial military goods, including a field hospital. Habre refused the bait...

Probably true, but nothing to boast about...

When at a Republican Party fundraiser in Shampoo Julie Christie crawls under the banquet table to give bed-hopping, two-timing Warren Beatty what's coming to him, the audience will laugh it up. Why not split a safe gut at this hind-sighted view of crazy, misguided youth at the down of the Nixon years. Goldie Hawn squirms in her miniskirts; flipped-out flower children skinny dip at a pot party; and Beatty, as the highly heterosexual hairdresser George, gets by for language with just muttering "You're beautiful, baby, beautiful." That director Hal Ashby glosses over and thus...

...eight lions and four tigers into tabbies. The aerial artists performed miracles with no safety net below. When 45 tons of elephants came thundering through the sawdust for the grand finale, the kids could almost reach out and touch their quivering flanks. The pachyderms reared up on their hind legs, unrolled their trunks, and trumpeted farewell...
