...walled city of Tsinan, capital of Shantung Province, is some 150 miles behind the Japanese front lines in Central China. For three months it has been part of Japan's "conquered territory" and the base of operations for the Japanese thrust at China's "Hindenburg Line" along the Lunghai Railway in southern Shantung. Garrisoned only by a small Japanese force because all available troops have been sent to the front, the Japanese were forced to employ two Chinese battalions, who surrendered when the city was occupied, as Tsinan's military police. Last week hundreds of Chinese soldiers...

Last week with a great grinding of gears, this Japanese machine, nose-jammed for a month against the "Hindenburg Line," supplies exhausted, communications cut, went into reverse and began backing away to feel for safer ground...

...Japanese "grand push," launched ten weeks ago to capture the Chinese "Hindenburg Line" and the strategic Lung-hai Railway, was still stalled last week on the banks of the Grand Canal in southern Shantung Province, 35 miles northeast of Suchow. Towns were taken, then recaptured as neither side made an effort to hold positions for long. Chinese guerillas tore up sections along 40 miles of the Tientsin-Pukow railway...

...ships, they die by thousands. Typhus, more than cold or Russians, made Napoleon retreat from Russia in 1812. In 1914 typhus killed 150,000 Serbs and 30,000 of their Austrian prisoners. The plague spread to Russia, where it infected 25,000,000, killed 3,000,000, and made Hindenburg fear to move German troops from his Polish front to his French front. Today few U. S. residents know anything of the disease or of the dirty pink eruptions, high fever, delirium and terrific death toll peculiar to typhus fever.*Half-a-dozen years ago, however, Dr. Rolla Eugene Dyer...

Japanese have been striking not only down the Peking-Shanghai line but also down the Peking-Hankow railway, and last week the war was going great guns in the U-shaped area these roads make with "China's Hindenburg Line." This is not a closely coordinated system of defenses like the French Maginot Line, but over a period of years the Chinese have built important numbers of cement pillbox forts in a sausage-shaped area. This is traversed by the curiously named Lung-hai Railway, so called because it starts from the sea at Haichow and penetrates far inland...
