Much of this public fervor looks comically ill informed in hindsight. In the U.S. and Britain, fairs and exhibitions regularly featured exhibits illustrating Mendelian laws of inheritance, often in the form of black-and-white guinea pigs stuffed and mounted to demonstrate the heritability of fur color. Kevles quotes from a chart accompanying such a display: "Unfit human traits such as feeblemindedness, epilepsy, criminality, insanity, alcoholism, pauperism and many others run in families and are inherited in exactly the same way as color in guinea pigs...
...think that Steve Martin wrote it [Picasso at the Lapin Agile] with 20/20 hindsight, of course, looking back on the 20th century. One of the most poignant lines of the play is "Ah, the 20th century, the works of artists and musicians dominated the works of politicians," and that's not necessarily true at all, I don't think that's true at all, but it is very interesting, the lines are definitely crossing, scientists and musicians are becoming as important to culture as the people who shape history, the military, and politicians...
...next nine months, East Africa went off the intelligence radar screen. No more CIA reports of terror threats were delivered to the Nairobi embassy. In hindsight, it was probably a tip-off that something bad might happen. Terror cells go quiet before they attack. The CIA thought it had busted up the bin Laden cell, but during the silent period, "the B-team came in," says a U.S. intelligence official. Mohamed Rashed Daoud al-'Owhali and Mohamed Sadeek Odeh, trained in explosives at a bin Laden camp, eventually joined Fazul in Nairobi to organize the strike...
...colony of peaceful, industrious little creatures is ripped off by marauders from afar. Ants and grasshoppers. That too. But in conspiratorial hindsight one might see A Bug's Life, the first feature from John Lasseter and his Pixar whizzes since their 1995 computer-generated hit Toy Story, as the company's rearview metaphor for its battle with DreamWorks' Antz. That similar computer-animated cartoon was conceived after the Pixar pic but released before it. It's bug-eat-bug in Hollywood's animation wars...
...Mixfest '98, the seventh annual, two-day concert event sponsored by Boston radio station MIX 98.5 (WBMX). Fans who braved the weather to spend a disastrous afternoon at City Hall Plaza soon realized that they were duped by a manipulative publicity bonanza on the part of MIX radio. In hindsight, it seems that this concert had little to do with free music, and a lot to do with free publicity for the radio station. That should have been apparent from the weeks of obnoxious, on-air hype that led up to the Columbus Day weekend event...
